Volume and Lift Inspired by the 50's, 60's and 70's

1970's Waves saw the parting down the middle of the hair and was quite similar to previous styles from previous era's with slight change.

1960's hair was about volume and modernity. High fashion yet simple!

1950's hair applied not only to women but also to men with the introduction of teddy boy's. Which included a quiff and dressing smart. The hair has Victorian connotations to it and can also be created on the women.

To create Volume and lift inspired by the 50's, 60's and 70's you will need:

- Comb to backcomb
- Pin Tail Brush
- Dry Shampoo
- Grips
- Sectioning Clips
- Curling Tongs
- Dressing out comb

Step by Step:

- Remember to follow health and safety. If the model has any scalp conditions then take this into consideration with the products you use and the techniques used on the hair.
- Brush the hair thoroughly to remove and knots and tangles.
- Part the hair down the centre. Ensure that the parting is dead centre by getting your model to look straight into the mirror.
- Part the hair also at the sides just behind the ear at clip aside so it is not in your way.
- The nape of the neck is your finishing point for the style you are creating.
- Starting just behind the section of hair at the ears, at the top of the head, take a small section and spray at the roots with dry shampoo. Brush the excess dry shampoo off with a brush. The dry shampoo allows the backcomb to stay in place.
- Pull the hair up and wrap into the curling tong, curling the hair away from your body. Put the curl in place with a sectioning clip. A grip would leave the marks on the hair. Make sure that the curling tong is away from the models head, and check that it is not too hot for them.
- Continue down the head until you reach the finishing point at the nape of the neck.
- Apply this technique to the hair either side of the centre curls. Curl the hair in the same way and secure with a sectioning clip. Make the hair into a triangle shape.
- To check that the hair is cool, place your finger inside the curl. If it is still warm then it is not ready to take out.
- When the hair has cooled down, take out the curls starting from the bottom of the hair. Unravel the bottom girl and backcomb by brushing the hair down with a backcomb brush. Once backcomb has created, push it to the root and repeat.
- Once that strand of hair has been backcombed, repeat for the other curls, from bottom to the top.
- Tease the hair with a dressing out comb to join the sections together so that they blend nicely.
- Once all of the hair has been backcombed, pull the hair into your hand and twist at the finishing point at the nape of the neck. Twist up, creating a beehive shape. Make sure to look in the mirror and check that the hair is even. Once it is, pin in place.
- The front section that has been placed aside until later can now be pulled back behind the ears and pinned at the nape of the neck.
- Spray with hairspray to secure.
- The backcombing should be easy to brush out. Make sure to be gentle with the hair.

- Split the hair into two again and tie into a knot, placing the ends of the knot into the models hand.
- For the last section at the bottom of the hair, take the section and split into two, get the model to hold this hair.
- Take the front section and place under the second section of hair into the third pieces of hair. Knot these together.
- The second section of hair, move to the front and take the third bit into the hand. The second section has now become the first section of hair.

Displaying IMG_5928.JPG

- To transform the waterfall plait into a ladder plait start off again like you would as if you were creating a french plait.
- Instead of leaving strands down, pick them up from the waterfall above.
- So plait like before, when you get to the dropped down hair, place it into your plait and carry on down the line until all the hair has been picked up.

Five Strand Plait:

- Brush the hair thoroughly to remove any knots and tangles.
- To create a five strand braid, take three strands of hair into the left hand, and two into the right.
- Take a strand from the right over the other strand in the right hand. Then stop.
- Repeat from the left, taking a strand over and then under and stop.
- The strands should now have swapped sides with two in the left and three in the right.
- Keep repeating over, under and stop to help with the process.
- Repeat moving the hair under and over and then stop when the plait resembles a five strand plait.

Modern Up-do with added accessories

To create a chignon you will need the following products:

- Brush
- Sectioning comb
- Hair tie
- Grips
- Hairspray
- Hair Net
- Accessories to add into the hair
- V Grips

Step by Step:

- Brush the hair thoroughly to remove any knots and tangles.
- Section the hair behind the ears and secure out of the way.
- Brush the hair into a low ponytail.

Timed Assessment Images

The moodboard above shows my inspiration for hair and makeup for the timed assessment. My makeup and hair is based on Nars doing a catwalk show for Marc Jacobs, for which Nars is a regular behind the scenes. The makeup is going to consist of dewy skin, dark lips and natural eyes. The hair is a slick back ponytail, which will be plaited in a twisted edge fishtail plait.

Facechart showing the look I want to aim for in my assessment. In depth makeup list and the hair drawing will help me to get the idea from paper to face.

How to- Hair: Twisted Edge Fishtail Plait

- Brush the hair thoroughly to get rid of any knots and tangles.
- Place a small amount of gel onto the palm of your hand and work through the top of the hair including the roots.
- Brush the hair up into a high, sleep ponytail.
- Part the ponytail into two sections.
- Start the braid off as you normally would, taking a strand from the right over to the left, and the left over to the right.
- Repeat this twice.
- Take a piece from the right, instead of placing over the top onto the left section, take it behind and place into the left section. Repeat with the left section, taking it behind to the right.
- Repeat this twice.
- Alternate the placing of hair from infront and behind.
- Each section needs to be repeated twice, so two from the left and two from the right.
- Tie the plait with a hairband once you are about two inches away from the ends of the hair.
- Spray the ends of the hair with Kryolan Dark Red.
- Secure the hair style and any wispy pieces of hair with hairspray.

I made sure to have in depth step by steps so that I could get every aspect of my idea right. By writing a product list it ensured that I would not forget anything and everything would be prepared for the day.

I got my model to fill out a consultation form because I had never worked on her before therefore I needed to know about her skin, the condition of her hair and also if she had any allergies. If anything came up during the application of makeup I would write it down on the sheet to keep everything up to date.

Above are my final images from my timed assessment. I managed to get everything finished on time. Being organised helped with this. The makeup is as I imagined. Very effortless with neutral colours and flawless skin. My favourite part is the hair. I love the 3D aspect of the plait, which creates texture against the sleek hair.

Creating Volume in the Hair - Blow Drying

Creative Volumed Hair

-      Root Boost
-      Serum
-      Wax / Putty
-      Shine Spray
-      Mousse
-      Hair Dryer with Nozzle
-      Vent Brush
-      Section Clips
-      Hairspray to finish

- Wash the hair thoroughly.
- Adding heat to wet hair means you can manipulate the hair to any structure. - - Use the nozzle on the hair dryer to distribute the heat where you want it to go. - Section the hair into thin, clean, manageable sections.
- Lift the hair high from the root using a vent brush. A vent brush allows the heat to go through the brush to the hair.
- With the hairdryer, dry underneath the raised hairbrush in a back and forward motion. The hair dryer should be on a bearable heat for the client.
- Repeat with the hair positioned above the brush. Make sure to keep the brush in a raised position for both motions.
- Pull the brush through the hair, twisting it as you go to create a smooth finish. If the hair is cold then it is still wet.
- Continue with the next section, making sure the wet hair doesn't touch the section you have just created lift on. Do not run your hands through the hair as this will deflate the volume you have just created as there is moisture and oils on hands.
- Finish with a cool heat and hairspray to set.

Wet the hair to apply heat in order to manipulate to your chosen structure.
